The internet has changed the way many games are played, including all the casino classics. Now, players no longer need to travel to a land-based venue to play games like Blackjack or Roulette, thanks to online play.

Many classic card games have made the transition to the digital format, and now there are more varieties and variants than ever before to choose from. From online Blackjack to Poker, here are the classic card games that you can play online.

Classic Blackjack

Blackjack is arguably the descendent of one of the oldest card games in the world, with roots in the classic European games of Vingt-et-Un and Thirty-One. It’s also one of the most popular casino games to this day, in part thanks to the straightforward core premise of the game.

Players aim to get a hand value that’s as close to 21 as possible, without overshooting it and going bust. Their hand value is compared against the dealers, rather than those of any other players at the table.

At the start of the game each player is dealt two cards face up while the dealer receives one face up card and one face down. Play then proceeds with players deciding whether they want to hit (taking an extra card to improve their hand value) or stand (keeping their hand at its current value and ending their turn).

Blackjack variants

A game as old as Blackjack has given rise to plenty of variants, with twists on the classic ruleset, the actions available to players and game mechanics. There are too many to list out every one, but a few of the most popular varieties aside from classic Blackjack that you can find online are:

  • European Blackjack – where the dealer only gets their face-up card before the start of play
  • Spanish 21 – where all tens are removed from the deck, but players gain more options for their hand
  • Atlantic City Blackjack – where hands can be split up to three times, and late surrenders are permitted

Poker

A rather different kind of card game compared to Blackjack, Poker has also proven itself popular among players over the last century. Rather than playing against the house, this particular card game involves playing against others at the table.

One of the most distinct aspects of Poker is the fact that it can involve bluffing when a player doesn’t have the strongest of hands.

The most popular variant of Poker is Texas Hold’em, where players are dealt two personal cards and five community cards are dealt to the table. Any combination of those seven cards can be used to form a five-card hand.

In Omaha Poker – another popular format – players receive four cards to their hand and must use two of those in combination with three of the community cards.

Seven-Card Stud is an older variant of Poker where there are no community cards involved, with players dealt a combination of face-up and face-down cards over the rounds of the game.

Blackjack and Poker are both popular card games in their own right, with many of their different variant formats also available to play online.
